(At a conference, several years back, @ColdWarScience and I were having a conversation about the Soviet space gun when a VERY drunk Marine butted in and wanted to know what we were talking about, clearly spoiling for some sort of confrontation with the lame historians.)

(The conference was also hosting a Marine ball or something, along with the annual meeting of the History of Science Society, if I remember correctly. Though it might have been SHAFR? But I think HSS.)

(Anyway, I proceeded to tell the Marine all about the Soviet space guns, and why they existed, and how they were extremely rad and tell you a lot about the differences between the American and Soviet space programs.)

(Visibly bored and confused, the drunk soldier just took off and left us alone. Victory for the nerds! Soviet space guns for the win.)

I heard or read something at some point about the Soviets trying to test a 23mm Knudleman cannon in orbit. Maybe in connection w trying to shoot down the USAF MOL spacecraft?
-
Even they thought it was a crazy idea and were pretty sure the recoil would've none bad things to the firing spacecraft. And dismissed it. Just like we did w MOL! Who says there was no sanity during the Cold War?!

"Installed on the Almaz space station in 1970s, the R-23M Kartech [cannon] was derived from a powerful aircraft weapon."https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a18187/here-is-the-soviet-unions-secret-space-cannon/ …

Oh, but the Soviets *were* developing laser pistols for their space soldiers! When our glorious Space Force takes to the sky it should settle for nothing less. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_laser_pistol …pic.twitter.com/RJ2vXXQnzb
