The sourcing of this claim is pretty bad, as an aside. But even if it were true, I don't think it absolves people from thinking carefully about the history here. One does not measure the appropriateness of one's own conduct by the lowest of the lows.
(Imagine if you flipped this around — Did the US burning ~100,000 civilians in Tokyo with napalm absolve the Japanese from doing terrible things in its goal to prosecute the war, or from thinking seriously about its own actions later? Obviously not.)
No one is free of guilt in that war, except perhaps for the lowliest combatants and civilians. It was an apocalypse that should have been ended far sooner.
