Does John Hersey's book count? Or too much about the moment and not enough about the long term? Curious.
I like Hersey's book a lot, but it's not really on the decision to use the bomb. The orthodox version of the bombing story can accommodate empathy for the victims ("ended the war early, saved more lives on average, necessary evil"), though it often glosses over consequences.
Hersey’s account did change the metric and symbolism of that utilitarianism, however, from a narrow patriotic nationalism (saved my grandad on a boat near Okinawa) to an all-inclusive humitarianism (lots more people on both sides would have died).
