One of the difficulties in talking with Americans in particular about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is that many of them have, at best, a half-remembered high-school version of that history in their head, and the subject is typically not covered well in high school.

Perhaps the war could have ended by November. But how many civilians in SE Asia would have died of starvation and disease just waiting for the war to end, as the capacity of the Japanese to tend to their empire vanishes? How many Americans die in accidents training for invasion?
