The dramatic difference in time zones between DC and Japan mean that some aspects of the atomic bombing timeline are more compressed than the raw dates make clear. On August 8, 1945, in Washington DC (then on Eastern War Time = EWT = UTC-4), three huge things happened:
1. At 10:45am EWT, Truman had a meeting with his Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, where he was briefed on the damage done to Hiroshima.https://twitter.com/wellerstein/status/1027172574537637889 …
2. At 3pm EWT, Truman announced that the Soviet Union had entered the war against Japan (which had started a few hours before, at midnight on August 8/9, Manchurian time zone).
3. At 10pm EWT, Nagasaki was bombed (11am local time, August 9).
