Interesting! I noticed in the second clipping they said something about "gas shells exploded in the blast" ... were they trying to sneakily warn people of fallout?

More that they were giving themselves cover if they did need to evacuate anyone (which they ended up not needing to do).

Hee hee, I worked as a High School Football stringer reporter for that paper in the early ‘70s. My best friend was the Sports Editor. Sadly The Herald Post is no more.
