Not *totally* clean by itself, but it would do a lot of damage... the impactor that killed the dinosaurs was on the order of 120 teratons of energy. So that's a "make NEARLY everything extinct" level of energy release. A perfectionist would desire more...

The way I heard the story from a chemistry teacher, they feared they might ignite the atmosphere in a CHEMICAL reaction, burning Nitrogen and Oxygen. And when looking into it, they supposedly discovered that reaction to be endothermic, so it could not happen.
