Leaving aside the “YAY NUCLEAR DETERRENCE!” bit, this thread has some fascinating photos of UK Polaris missile submarines. Polaris to the UK was JFK’s belated replacement for the canceled Skybolt ALBM.https://twitter.com/royalnavy/status/1007579283768991746 …

I've always wondered why they chose a joystick like that for the SLBMs. Seems totally silly compared to the silo approach (turn a switch). Must be some sort of story there...pic.twitter.com/OnrZ3eUdhS

Looks like a button that says "launch" at left ("пуск"), in the recessed compartment with a closable door. This is from an SS-18 bunker in the Museum of Soviet Strategic Nuclear Forces, Pobuskoe, Ukraine. https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/control-consolelauncher-ss18-satan-team-bunker-708444343 …pic.twitter.com/Q1XMcLNyKb

And here's one with the door still on the compartment: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Decommissioned_Soviet_Missile_Base_near_Pervomaysk_Ukraine_(16359023982).jpg … Unfortunately I'm not finding many photos of the whole panel that are readable. The thing at the far left looks like an unlock key of some sort.

(I mean far right.) Anyway — an interesting question I hadn't thought about before.
