I read a lot of dark things, but Paolo Bacigalupi's "The Water Knife" is the first thing I've read in a LONG while that I just thought I needed to take a break from. I find it grimmer than "The Road" to be honest — it feels more plausible, and echoes reality more faithfully.
"The Road" is dark — to be sure. But it's still in the genre of "slate wiped clean," and only ~3 people are sympathetic. There's no injustice in a world that far gone; the concept loses meaning. Whereas "The Water Knife" (so far) is about suffering AND deep injustice to boot.
Just read a review of "The Water Knife"; it looks like a gripping and, especially given the headlines of the current era, very believable story. Thanks for the heads-up, I think I may buy it.
