    A great-aunt of mine graduated with an M.D. degree ~1900. When my grandfather broke his leg 11 places, other drs. wanted to amputate. She managed it, saved the leg, he did great. In my house growing up, her name was like the name of God.

    In 1951 Dr. Lilia Wallis came to as an intern/resident. She later became a fellow & worked in the outpatient dept. A few years later she rose to clinical professor of medicine & attending physician. Dr. Wallis established and directed the Office of Women in Medicine.

    Dr. Janet Travell, 1926, went on to become the 1st female White House physician. In 1989, the Office of Women in Medicine unveiled a portrait of Dr. Travell (along w/ Dr. Scudder) in efforts to acquire portraits of the institution's pioneering women doctors.

    Dr. Ida Scudder was born into a family of male physicians. She was the 3rd generation of her family to become a medical missionary in India, where she helped women during childbirth. She received the 11th annual Award of Distinction at the luncheon in '59.
