I saw this a lot in academia. Maybe because there’s an idea of getting communication “down to a science” and then wanting to impart that wisdom on others. But I always felt like it erased what worked for *me*

Avoid giving feedback like: “If it were me, I’d do it like this.”
It’s not you or about you. It’s about helping someone else effectively convey their message in their own unique, authentic way.

Ask “What is it you’re trying to get across?”
Highlight places where that message comes through crystal clear
Note places where you get confused

I think really often, folks think the purpose of feedback is to poke holes in something rather than identify the holes and close them up. Asking questions, rather than prescribing solutions, is a good way to let someone address those holes in a way that is authentic to them.

I find myself saying this. I mean it in a way of, "this is my opinion, but yours might be different and there's lots of different ways to science/write/present and that's okay too." But I guess it might not come across that way.
