For sure — though in this case, possibly the larger (related) issue is that wider society only acknowledges a few interests worth having, so you have a bunch of legitimately stellar experts who just happen to be obsessed with WWII planes or whatever

Caring for others is important, obviously, but not so much for oneself. However I think that the key parts that have to survive are: 1. Not minding what others think, and 2. Curiosity.

Caring for others is *super* important for risk mitigation (e.g. in the form of local social safety nets), and you'll *really* need that if you have 1 & 2 in abundance
