Can voluntarily reader-funded blogs and web serials replace traditional publishing? Maybe with more flexible funding and discovery platforms?

The challenge here is that with voluntarily reader-funded, populism is intensified. One can remain true to their vision, but the most successful will always be populist, while the critically-acclaimed will struggle.
Is this a problem? I mean this seriously. "Remaining true to your vision" is a phrase that feels super, super loaded.

The most successful being populist & the critically-acclaimed struggling isn't necessarily a problem, but sometimes you do want experts to choose for you, rather than the crowd, right?

If you do, you pay those experts, and you pay for the content they recommend you consume because you're already paying for the value you assume they've provided in recommending it. If you don't, then no, you don't want them over the crowd... right?
