I think we should talk more about the clear success of software engineering as a high-skill profession with virtually no gatekeeping — why & how that’s working, etc.

It's super-interesting. Reminds me of chess, where internet + cheap chess computers have taken elite chess from being heavily gated to relatively open. Top grandmasters all used to come from a tiny handful of places; now seems much more open.

Something I don't understand well: how software has resisted the enormous pressure for occupational licensing. E.g.: (from https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/THP_KleinerDiscPaper_final.pdf … ) Is it that BigCos don't want it, and can resist? Or something else?pic.twitter.com/29CnzlPSUf

Do you think it's because it's so easy to participate online anonymously and demonstrate skills? The Paul Graham adage to just make things people want applies to anyone and the proof is often in the product, or the OSS contributions, or whatever.

Yeah: (a) the skills can be learned online for free, (b) very knowledgeable communities provide fast feedback loops, (c) social rewards are readily available for building cool stuff at minimal cost; notably, building stuff people like develops a lot of peripheral skills

Interesting. What makes you say there’s no gatekeeping? (Just curious 😊)

How cleanly do you cut between software engineers and say, hardware engineers or statisticians? I mean, so many of the other STEMS also code, but don't have the title.

I guess software is a relatively recent invention & moves too fast for gatekeepers. Just look at the constant explosion of webdev tools, frameworks, and languages. On the other hand, other STEMs that code suffer from legacy gatekeeping because they came earlier.

Yes! My bf was mostly homeschooled, raised in a "fringe religion," didn't attend college, but thanks to hard work + accessible resources, is one of the best software engineers I know, and was just promoted to VP of Engineering
