Maybe to notice true pits of despair (a la Inadequate Equilibria) you have to see beyond faux pits of despair, like no AC.

Surely trying to get people to care about your problems by telling them theirs don't matter and that their suffering isn't real is at the very least a really bad strategy?

This comes across as horribly insensitive and tone deaf, especially considering his background (white male, upper middle class). Somewhat ironic too, given he's a Jew, which I'm assuming gave him some exposure to pogroms and other forms of oppression his ancestors faced.
