I think it's hard to define a "typical" VC. Getting funding from a top-tier VC lends a lot of credibility & makes it a lot easier raise more, so everyone pitches them if they can. My impression is that it's kinda messy after that — lots of word of mouth, who-knows-who stuff?
Also, what's a pitch — a conversation, a deck, a meeting? Cornering a VC at a conference? Sure, you've got start-ups chasing VCs, but you've also got VCs chasing start-ups. Sometimes you've got one partner who's sure this could be the big one & a team that needs to be convinced.
