Problems in education are over-described on the object level but given woefully little context, which makes sense for a system first designed to create pliant industrial/farm workers. The pressure to "learn" is partly teachers incentivized by test scores & partly cultural mythos

School was not designed to create pliant workers; it was at the risk of it. To defend otherwise will require showing that conformity aimed tactics were more than risk mitigation. For knowledge and ability are clearly risks to compliance. #fought

*'at the risk or reducing compliance', as the second clause of the first semtence, would be more formal eg better logic. Anywho. Didnt want to leave you hanging if you were sick of getting away with loose stream of thought. Eg wanted a fight. So take that.

Compulsory childhood education genuinely was designed to train adherence to authority & serve the labor market that existed at the time, and the format hasn't changed much. But yes, learning *does* present a risk to compliance, which is why very little of it happens at school

As you've pointed out, there are tons of great resources in schools, but students are given limited access to them. I think they're mostly props, tbh.https://twitter.com/jhogg17/status/989523555002994693 …

To complete the thought: if viewed as a resource, with opportunity cost, and all the normal good perceptions of a (mere) resource, the institution is more useful and less mentally unhealthy than when imbued with dogmatic and somehow perscriptive value (which I take to be usual).

In elementary school, I would stay in at recess to read -- this became a "problem," and I was forced outside. I'd read when the teacher was distracted, then be chided to "stay on task" & do the rote work I already knew how to do. I resorted to smuggling books into the bathroom.

I *loved* reading, but my ability to focus/get into flow was hampered (possibly even in the long run) by being constantly distracted and chided or punished for doing it at any time aside from the 30 min/day allotted for it. This is an absolutely insane way to "teach" children.

I resorted to staying up all night to read (and know a lot of friends that did the same). Might be why we all have terrible eyesight now, but hey, worth it!
