In elementary school, I would stay in at recess to read -- this became a "problem," and I was forced outside. I'd read when the teacher was distracted, then be chided to "stay on task" & do the rote work I already knew how to do. I resorted to smuggling books into the bathroom.

I think that in the modern era, compulsion goes back to Martin Luther or thereabouts and was directed at adherence to religious authority particularly, rather than that needed for the labour market. Though there is the Protestant Work Ethic, of course...
