I think that having these discussions without splitting cultural exchange from [disrespect/harm/etc] has created a situation where one extreme side is basically arguing for cultural segregation & the other downplays disrespect/harm toward people from other cultures. Not good.

The conversation I *wish* we were having would be about how deceptively tricky it is to see what might be disrespectful toward or harmful to people with a culture you know little/nothing about, and how to share all our cool cultural stuff in a way everyone gets to feel good about

My impression is the issue of cult. aprop. only comes up when a culture feels under siege or like it is being attacked in some way. Under normal circumstances cultures generally enthusiastically want others to adopt their ideas, values and customs.

Sure — that's the problem I'm trying to point to. In that case, there probably is some [disrespect/harm/etc] happening, but if the focus is on the content of the cultural exchange rather than the nature of the harm, it's hard to actually fix the problem *or* learn from it.

From the examples I've seen, there's been kind of a lack of awareness around what I think is a real benefit: that mainstreaming x often immediately benefits the non-minorities promoting x, but rather quickly creates much greater interest in & opportunities around x

I actually think he's making some good points, at least insofar as they're empirically testable and *should* be tested. Do white restaurateurs serving burritos, etc. crowd out minority restaurateurs? Or do they generate interest in that cuisine that helps everyone? Or both?
