As mush as this appeals to me too, it is very hard to tell a character story in this fashion. Without characters we care about, most readers find fiction boring.
I actually think you can tell a much better character story, e.g. through personal letters — choice of stationary, handwriting, signature, whether or not there's a coffee stain at the edge. Could be very, very rich.
