As mush as this appeals to me too, it is very hard to tell a character story in this fashion. Without characters we care about, most readers find fiction boring.

I actually think you can tell a much better character story, e.g. through personal letters — choice of stationary, handwriting, signature, whether or not there's a coffee stain at the edge. Could be very, very rich.

Ada, or Ardor by Nabokov has hundreds of red herrings and verrry easily missed details. You can tell VV was positively giddy while writing it. House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski is also like this (layered fiction/non-fiction), though not nearly as good a book.
