I think people might be more forthcoming about their policy preferences than what they actually want to see happen because concrete details can reveal points of self-interest & uncomfortable tradeoffs. Policy prefs generally reveal less about you than fully-baked outcome prefs.

This is a great insight and exactly right. There seems an assumption that our desired outcomes are the same, and a misconception that its just a matter of reverse engineering to get to the shared goal.

...like that there should be equal opportunity for all people (regardless of race, creed, sex...), if we got to people’s cores, we would find this to be untrue as they favor their tribes. It shows trickle down vs social pgms not as dif strategies but dif sports altogether.
