It is not the job of science to tell you that the world works the way you imagine it does, or to tell you which world you ought to want. It’s not the job of scientific evidence to paint neat pictures or justify any more or less than it does on its merits. http://amp.nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/03/denying-genetics-isnt-shutting-down-racism-its-fueling-it.html?__twitter_impression=true …

Pressing a political ideology as contingent on particular scientific facts makes both the ideology & the science more fragile — if inconsistent evidence emerges, the former must backpedal or the latter must be hushed/discredited. In the fullness of time, probably bothpic.twitter.com/iKYSN4EBT5

It’s short-sighted to insist that there’s no feasible hereditary basis for IQ differences between pops, esp. for progressives. There’s no inherent merit or moral value to a high IQ. We could be creating a society that doesn’t leave people behind! This is the wrong hill to die on.

The problem is that the science is actually not on the side of the ppl who try to push race I.Q. at least not in the way they push it https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2007/12/17/none-of-the-above?irgwc=1&source=affiliate_impactpmx_12f6tote_desktop_Skimbit%20Ltd.&mbid=affiliate_impactpmx_12f6tote_desktop_Skimbit%20Ltd ….

It’s not a problem. Science does not and should not be made to take sides. There’s a growing body of evidence around what we’re measuring when we measure IQ, how it varies within & between pops, etc. As usual, it’s wonderfully messy & premature conclusions are a terrible idea

I agree. I’m not saying the science is the problem. Charles Murray’s conclusions with the incomplete info that he has is the problem. I think Ezra, as well as The New Yorker article, does a great job highlighting that.

I haven’t read Murray’s work, so I’m not in a position to say whether he’s oversold the state of the evidence — but advancing theories & organizing the evidence for them, even for young fields, is not what I’m talking about.
