Near-universally, the coolest people I know think about the Things You Can’t Say *all the time*. They’re not confident that charitably-interpreted mainstream views are wrong, but can’t take it on faith. From an outsider’s perspective, they’re playing with social matches.
There’s a deeply underrated inferential gap between these folks & people who happily avoid the cultural third rail. From one side of the fence, everyone is averting their eyes for social expediency. From the other, only bigots would care enough to sacrifice solidarity for nuance
Watching @SamHarrisOrg get slammed — then slammed again for losing his cool when accused of peddling pseudoscience & racism — really highlights this inferential gap for me. Sam is one of the most broadly truth-seeking & compassionate humans I’ve met; of course this bothers him!
Being a techie woman is a massive boon here. I can goad people into discussions on biological sex, gender & tech, have basically full allowances in setting the norms of the conversation, & at worst be accused of being “self-hating.”
