Children like adults self-segregate. The issue I had was that if boys are being held to the same standard as girls then perhaps it would be better to segregate them into separate classes until they become adolescents. It has been done before and there was no harm to it.

I'm not convinced that girls' tendency to conform more uniformly than boys indicates this paradigm is good for them, or that they wouldn't benefit from a less restrictive environment. Playful boys sustain the obvious harms, but any lost benefits are buried in the counterfactual.
