At this point, FOSTA is very likely to become law. Free speech advocates are alarmed & sex workers are terrified of losing access to info about dangerous johns. Politicians are surely in part motivated by the signaling benefits of passing a supposedly “anti sex trafficking” bill.
People DON’T read legislation, they don’t listen to sex workers and other vulnerable groups that lack widespread appeal. They DO see titles like “Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act” and expect their reps to vote yes, facts aside. What do we do about this?
It's a long shot, but this is the best I've come up with: We contribute to open source, decentralized systems and do our best to make them attractive to non-developers, as well as technologically immune to the incompetence of legislature as well as the malfeasance of predators.
