It’s feasible that guns are an effective means of self-defense *and* that those scenarios are rare relative to scenarios preceding an accidental shooting and/or suicidality in the household... people failing to sort themselves into the right reference group probably contributes.

I wonder if it could be the case that having a gun even decreases safety during a home invasion, given that an invader could overpower you and shoot you with it?

Yep. Additionally, any kind of shooting, even one in self defense, would still likely incur damage or liability for the insurance company. So the two ideas aren't actually that related.
