Humanity, on the whole, spent most of its existence deeply failing to think scientifically. Only recently has that started to change. That didn't change because we suddenly got smarter.

Thinkers in early history did not get far because they had few other thinkers to compete with, not because they lacked education in scientific thinking.

I'm not talking about knowledge outcome, I'm talking about method. But if you're actually saying early history thinkers didn't use scientific methods because they didn't talk about methodology with others, well then you're kind of making my point.

Education does a lousy job of teaching the scientific method. Researchers learn it on their own to compete with others.

I greatly disagree. It's strange to me that you think the scientific method is learned, but for some reason that learning cannot be benefited from a teacher guiding it. That's not the case for nearly anything we learn.

If you equate education with all 'benefiting from teachers guidance', then you misunderstand Bryan's case against education. Maybe you needed a lot of help from teachers but I did most of my learning without and I am not exceptional.

Access to an excellent mentor or tutor is probably always beneficial, but... I don’t think you can really separate the teachers from the methods, and the methods are really suboptimal for learning & likely generate a lasting distaste for it in a substantial portion of students

There's lots of room for improvement and probably more in some areas than others. I think our K-12 could also improve science and math education a lot (see A Mathematician's Lament). Nevertheless, I think there is a still a lot of value added as is.

People clearly benefit from being educated, but how much of that added value is social? Moreover, is the social benefit greater than the social cost? That is what the case against education disputes.
