Humanity, on the whole, spent most of its existence deeply failing to think scientifically. Only recently has that started to change. That didn't change because we suddenly got smarter.

I expect humanity on the whole *has* gotten smarter, due to factors like falling prevalence of malnutrition.

Seems plausible. But I still greatly doubt that the change in scientific thinking was a consequence of any intelligence gains from environmental factors like that.

I agree that malnutrition shouldn't impact academia much, but I'm actually not sure which lens you're offering here. For one thing, there's a debate within the scientific community wrt whether scientific progress has actually slowed relative to what we should expect a priori.

From another angle: scientific literacy might be higher than ever (is it?), but it's still really, really bad for the general population. The median American definitely cannot think scientifically. I'd guess that the median BSc in the sciences could not design a decent study.

The median is bad. But that the median is bad doesn't mean that there isn't a benefit from education.

My position is that scientific thinking is very unintuitive and its rise in popularity (historically) is due to us teaching it.
