Researchers can dedicate the whole of their careers to *attempting* to model e.g. the impact of various global or state-level immigration policies on incontrovertibly important metrics, but “I’m not sure” is definitely not an ok contribution to any watercooler convo on the topic

great point. i'm not immediately getting the difference in importance in signalling policy prefs and outcome prefs tho ?

My interpretation: Alice and Bob may have the same preferred outcomes (e.g. eradicating bigotry), but that means little to Bob unless Alice also shares his preferred way of getting there (e.g. killing all the bigots).
