What I'm saying is these approaches really are incompatible: 1. "You wanna fight for justice? Great! You can help. Come to this meeting." 2. "You wanna fight for justice? Great! You can help. But first you need to understand you're a shitty part of the problem."

It's a comically bad approach if your goal is to make your ideas fully accessible, which is probably what you should do if your ideas can easily percolate on their own merits. But gatekeeping can be wise if your ideas can't really defend themselves.

This is not actually an ineffectual strategy: widely disseminate your most sensible and agreeable ideas -- particularly ones most people already hold somewhat dear -- then demand some costly signal of alignment before moving on to shakier ground.
