I’ve been thinking a lot about how concerned I am with shifting norms around political disagreement — especially where saying something, casting a vote, etc. is perceived as *actual* violence & therefore ought to be responded to as though it were truly violent behavior.

Hate to say it but I think we're still in the early stages of technologies/strategies aimed at eliciting specific responses. Truly "getting news" was never as passive as flicking a switch, but it will increasingly require purposeful focus akin to meditation or martial arts

Spot on. I've begun thinking of this phenomenon as "anti-social media." I also wonder how much of this bling optimization for rage is fed by the ad revenue business model; rage is super potent emotion to maximize attention. What could we maximize with different incentives?
