I’ve been thinking a lot about how concerned I am with shifting norms around political disagreement — especially where saying something, casting a vote, etc. is perceived as *actual* violence & therefore ought to be responded to as though it were truly violent behavior.
Media is definitely complicit. I’m tempted by “we accept narratives uncritically when we’re cued to rage against someone,” but this isn’t a necessary motive. Even blind algorithms will feed us stories likely to make us angry! We click on those more often.
The way we consume our news (filtered just for us, tailored to the most recent snapshot of our online activity) can only exacerbate this. News Co X isn’t competing against an adversarial narrative; its content has to be tastier than the *same* narrative presented by someone else.
