Weirdly, the people claiming there are "no real consequences" to voicing unpopular opinions in Silicon Valley tend to be the same people calling for those who do to be fired.

People seem to have a super hard time perceiving the severity or lived experience of consequences dealt to others for whom they have little sympathy. Schadenfreude does not like to pause and consider itself.

IMO, not having sympathy for everyone (often fair) & thinking there ought to be consequences for saying some things (arguable, I think) aren't nearly as troubling as the reality distortion that seems to happen when those two things come together
