      This year, elderly and vulnerable Californians under lockdown were subjected to rolling electrical blackouts during a heat wave with temperatures as high as 121°F. That's because our grid relies heavily on renewables that — unlike nuclear — can't be scaled to meet demand spikes.

      CA is an earth quake zone, which is not ideal for nuclear safety, and it has enough deserts to reliably cover the energy needs of the entire US using solarthermal. The blackouts are the result of bad market incentives for monopolistic energy providers.

          Coal is terrible for air pollution and climate change, and mining it is destructive. However, the deadliness numbers of nuclear have been manipulated by UNSCEAR for political reasons. But one of the best reasons to maintain a nuclear industry is defense, which may be worth it.

          I also distrust the risk assessments; they have been made ever since the first reactors were built, and did not prevent numerous serious incidents due to human error, faulty materials and unforeseen environmental events.
