California's antipathy for nuclear power has been disastrous for its own stated goals and values. Just one plant remains, and it's slated to be decommissioned starting in 2024. This single plant currently accounts for 23% of the entire state's carbon-free energy generation.https://twitter.com/isaboemeke/status/1319674446391619584 …

hey, but we can all coordinate to turn down the AC to a reasonable 92 degrees, right?

-
Sure, because you know communism works. People love to do things that harm them personally but benefit other people.

Surely if it's that hot there should be no issue generating enough power through either wind or solar? Shutting down nuclear however is very stupid if there hasn't been enough other green infrastructure built yet. Build way too much wind + solar *then* remove nuclear.

CA is an earth quake zone, which is not ideal for nuclear safety, and it has enough deserts to reliably cover the energy needs of the entire US using solarthermal. The blackouts are the result of bad market incentives for monopolistic energy providers.

Yet Diablo Canyon appears to be at *extremely* low risk of failure due to core damage, nuclear generation worldwide remains the least deadly source of power, and solar's maintenance and storage challenges continue to unfortunately limit its usefulness.pic.twitter.com/tzjDQ3s9h7

There is no reason renewables can't be scaled - simply a matter of investing in appropriate clean generation and energy storage capacity

Nuclear accidents are a spook. Fukushima was the result of bad design. Chernobyl was a science fair project deliberately put into operation that caused failure, for reasons unknown (read: communist bureaucratic miscommunication). Diablo has weathered earthquakes already anyways.

Nuclear can't really scale either (gas can). Issue is poor market design and incompetence in California not renewables.

Sure, we could build a new nuclear plant and have that ready in *checks calendar* ... 20 years. Or we could just keep scaling solar and wind and storage and have that fixed in 2. Problem this summer was not capacity but transmission infrastructure.
