I think it's healthy for employers to wait at least a day or two as a "cool-down" period before firing someone, especially if it becomes a national news story.

Well I agree. However, it's dangerous to make claims about how a situation should be handled when it can easily be handled better by those involved. I'm sure this guys boss will make either the same call as you. Or decide to not fire him because of information unknown to us.
