More broadly, you're never going to be able to prove definitively that a person can or cannot change any particular desire they have, and this was never a great goal for either government or culture. If a "straight pill" comes out tomorrow, it shouldn't upend your entire argument

The thing about the relative inflexibility of sexual orientation that matters is that it makes it *especially* cruel to punish people for it. It wasn't the only (or most important) reason to insist people be able to make partnering choices for themselves.

It seems to me that the emphasis on innateness there was always a tactical move to get conservatives to accept gay rights. Liberal morality does not need to be sold on it, but the evidence that it's largely not a choice becomes a talking point to challenge RW claim of immorality.

Immutable categories are unfortunately good polemic. From gender essentialism to "all men are created equal" rhetoric, our society is obsessed with what things fundamentally are. Would be better to start with the end goal of maximizing growth/welfare and work backwards
