Who the fuck ever thought Uber or Postmates wasn't storing their phone number, email address, or order history? Do they think these things are displayed in-app by witchcraft?

Conversely, I would guess most of those don’t store your credit card info. Lyft uses Stripe and Uber uses Braintree, so they’re unlikely to be storing actual full card numbers.

Forget learning to code; but maybe there should be some more basic awareness around how software works (?)

https://twitter.com/atroyn/status/1298293147382865920?s=21 … the problem isn’t that people don’t realize that uber/whoever has their data, it’s that they don’t have any guarantees/ proof of what it is / could be used forhttps://twitter.com/atroyn/status/1298293147382865920 …

The problem is that the Cambridge Analytica story effectively convinced the American public that "personal data" (*waves hands*) could be and IS used to scalably brainwash individuals. Very few people actually have any model of how this is supposed to work

I guess if Uber uses your email address to email you a list of arguments for why you should vote to soften regulations affecting Uber, sure, it's using your user data to advertise to you. But this doesn't exactly max out the scare factor, people understand what a fucking email is

but it’s a subversion of expectation - it’s not why you gave them that info even though you know they _could_ use it for that

That's not true for me, YMMV. I don't consider it a data privacy issue. I'd rather get the "here's why your rates might increase" email before getting the "here's why your rates just increased" email.

i’m the same but there’s a reason these takes get play, and if we’re really smart we can make those reasons disappear so that the takes are exposed as nonsense
