A confession: it's very strange how quickly I became accustomed to the idea that city officials *could* close my business and ban gatherings in my home — not in the short term, but indefinitely. I was far more livid about the prospect of this at the lockdown 40-day mark...https://twitter.com/webdevMason/status/1255888311794585606 …

To cap, I should reiterate that I still take COVID seriously. 10 months in, case fatality globally is still at around 0.5-5%, quite bad given that we've had time to build out test capacity. As with SARS, signs of longer-term damage in recovered patients. Avoid this if you can.

To me, what adds to the insanity is positioning home arrest as something we OWN to a society; that anything but essential work* is LITERALLY killing the elderly ... that visiting a friend EQUALS putting a pillow on Aunt Esther’s face *and protests

Perhaps the way we view the importance of freedom and personal responsibility is the reason that mayors and governors differ in their approaches rather than the partisan split being a matter of understanding science.

the definition of a police state is draconian laws, selectively enforced. politicians create these laws and then tell people to go out and break them if arbitrary political criteria are met. Orwell would blush.

My college president had been pushing for ID checks by security to enter any buildings. We pushed back and she relented. COVID restrictions means she now has her way. I actually agree with the restrictions for now, but there is no chance she pulls back after this passes. :(

Well, eventually it may become normal. More importantly, the same places that pass these restrictions are the same places that try to criminalize gun ownership. Basically you will not have any tool to resist, nor will you care enough to resist because there will be more lockdowns

whether such actions ultimately ruled-legal-at-the-time/upheld-by-courts/validated-by-voters still TBD. lots of informal powers exist, de facto, only temporarily until challenged via longer cycles. post-crisis consensus & court-rulings could easily become: most of this was BS!

I had a *grand old time* on FB one day when I pointed out that my state’s governor had made dating a $500 misdemeanor, unless you were already cohabiting with your partner.
