I finally watched @SamHarrisOrg & @MaajidNawaz's documentary about Islam. It's really, really good.https://www.amazon.com/Islam-Future-Tolerance-Sam-Harris/dp/B07L6MSX9Z …

One of the reasons it's always a pleasure for me to listen to/watch Sam talk, knowing him personally, is that he is absolutely 100% the same person whether he's talking to the camera or a friend. One of the most sincere, honest and thoughtful people I have ever met

I remember seeing your review of Lying, likely from before you knew him personally. I think you liked the book but didn’t like something about the way he came across. It would be interesting to diagnose what that was and could provide Sam with some well-intentioned feedback.

It's been a while and I don't remember what my criticisms were at the time (or much of the book), but I definitely still believe that most people prefer to dispense and receive small personal lies, and that "radical honesty" *can* be a license to defect socially to one's benefit

Sam is a highly ethical and extremely self-aware person who doesn't selectively utilize honesty (knowingly or unknowingly) to manipulate or punish people, but I don't think he's wired quite the same way as most folks

I think it was from your goodreads but you seem to have taken it down or I’m mixing you up with someone else. I’m a fan and take his honesty commitment at his word (especially with co-signing from people like you) but he certainly seems to rub a lot of people up the wrong way.

And I’m agnostic that that’s entirely a function of him touching taboo topics (Altho it’s a massive factor of course). For instance, any of your former misgivings wouldn’t have been due to taboo.

From what I remember, your criticism was something like His arguments are pretty good but there’s vibe he gives off that I’m not overawed with that I can’t quite put my finger on that

I'm not sure whether that actually was me, or why I thought that at the time if it was! But I do wonder whether I had a more cynical view of his position prior to getting to know him. Very few people seem to sincerely "walk the walk" on this stuff.
