One of the weird insights you can gain from doing enough design work is that people can very sincerely believe they know *precisely* what they want when they have absolutely no idea what they want

Oh God, yes. Always ask them "What problem are you trying to solve." That gets them out of solution mode (which is your domain) and into problem mode.

Had a boss like that. Took a bunch of footage he shot on a trip for a TV show. He asked me to do a sizzle reel edit (to sell the show) with almost no direction. I did the best I could and when i showed it to him he didn't like it, but couldn't tell me what he wanted.
