One thing Portugal seems to do very well is making pharmacological drug treatment (e.g. methadone, suboxone) extremely accessible, which is almost certainly a very good idea

Portugal's drug situation is also mostly about... cannabis, which is still illegal to grow or sell. Most people enter treatment in Portugal for either cannabis or heroin, the latter being very well managed with medication. There is almost no meth use in Portugal.pic.twitter.com/dtFCWGTf31

I think there's a lot to like about Portugal's strategy, but IMO it's fair to hypothesize that it works well in part because the Portuguese just don't use a lot of drugs aside from cannabis, and traffickers are aggressively targeted and prosecuted.

Because treatment relies heavily on a pharmocological approach and very few of the country's drug users use stimulants, it's hard to say whether the same strategies would work for the US's meth problem. There is no "suboxone for meth." Treatment is much trickier.

Could it work for the US opioid crisis? I think so, if Americans were open to the idea of imposing sanctions on individuals without criminal proceedings. But barring that, just dramatically increasing the availability of suboxone treatment would be a *fantastic* idea.

What do you know about the status of guns in Portugal? A lot of our drug trafficking problem has to do with guns I think. Also marijuana was legalized in CA but there is not enough penalty for black market to eliminate bm + guns makes it still an issue.
