Of course McConnell would demonstrate transparent hypocrisy in a situation like this, and of course Democrats will respond by trying to pack the court as soon as the opportunity arises. My tolerance for people not seeing this despicable game for what it is now at an all-time low

The best case is no confirmation on any nomination made until after January, just to wind this crazy spiral down as much as possible. But if I could rewind time, I'd want to erase the entire Merrick Garland debacle

given what the GOP did (Garland), what they’ll probably do (appoint), how do you think the Democrats should respond?

Ethically, they should do the principled thing. Strategically, they should do the unprincipled thing and hope the other side grows the principles, which none of their constituents on either side seem to care much about anymore.

That’s an accurate description of the dilemma they’re facing, but I asked what ^you^ would do.

I would hope that I'd argue very strongly for *not* packing the court and try to form a bipartisan coalition around ending this insane pattern of arbitrary power-grabs, but there would be plenty of personal and party pressures against that

Okay. I get that and admire the principal, but I feel like “doing the honorable thing in the face of unscrupulous opponents, and losing” is exactly what Dems have been doing since GWB stole the 2000 election. Twenty years is a long time. Where’s the line?

I just disagree that that's what has occurred. For example, Obama's flurry of executive orders to work around Congress (many of which I agree with, content-wise) really do seem to have shifted the overton window in a way many of my friends warned (I poo-poo'd them, at the time)

I’m unfortunately too dumb to be that familiar with the “flurry.” Obama issued slightly fewer than GWB, slightly more than Clinton. But anyway I think that’s a reasonable perspective.
