Clumsily made but I did understand that to be the takeaway. It’s explicitly made at the end when two outfits are shown on her bed - the dance outfit and a traditional dress she had been told to put on by a family elder. She chooses a 3rd option, jeans and a shirt.
Dark genius indeed. If you're not critically analyzing the movie as you watch it, you won't think past the dichotomy presented and pick one side to identify with. The whole system is rigged.
