Insofar as the film presents these as flipsides of the same coin — and I don't know that it does, because I refuse to watch anything shamelessly marketed to me as softcore child porn, and this absolutely was — I don't know that it helps anyone reach beyond the poisonous dichotomy

One element I haven't seen discussed with the whole fiasco is that it's a French film, and French intellectual and artistic culture has a fairly horrific history of normalizing child molestation, up until just a few years ago.https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-02-21/french-writer-gabriel-matzneff-pedophile …

To the extent that French celebrity authors could frankly discuss their ongoing habit of raping prepubescent children in their books and on the news and have no real personal or professional repercussions, for many decades. Which is hard to imagine in the US.

Clumsily made but I did understand that to be the takeaway. It’s explicitly made at the end when two outfits are shown on her bed - the dance outfit and a traditional dress she had been told to put on by a family elder. She chooses a 3rd option, jeans and a shirt.

Dark genius indeed. If you're not critically analyzing the movie as you watch it, you won't think past the dichotomy presented and pick one side to identify with. The whole system is rigged.
