In retrospect, I think we may have been truly fucked from the moment we collectively decided that caring about COVID deaths vs. caring about working class livelihoods could be a legitimate tribal marker

Yeah, too much. There were plenty of decent people, in both tribes, who could paint a bigger picture, but the loudest voices seemed to be the most crazily partisan on these themes. (I live in the liberal tribe but could really empathize with those suffering from job losses.)
