I don't think causality flowed that way. Partisan silliness can be completely explained if most voters are strongly partisan, and take their copartisans' side when there are disputes. In that context, whenever Trump forms a silly belief, many follow, and things get silly. 1/

That theory also predicts that Dems will react partisanly, and rationality does seem to suggest extreme caution re the covid-safety of BLM protests and grade school, but Dems fell all over themselves to take those risks, consistent with their partisan outlook.
