Is "get screwed" the next "be honest," or am I messing something?

I think he is saying that being trusting of others has upside (all the benefits of connection) and downside (occasionally you get screwed).Unclear where the optimal point on that continuum is but it's not "maximally untrustful/vigilant". This implies getting screwed sometimes

That's certainly one way of saying a thing that wasn't actually said.

True, we might be overly generous in our interpretation.

Love that you get to live a life where the consequences of the more obvious interpretation don't touch you. Hope you appreciate it.

Since I’m missing it, what is the more obvious interpretation?

That you explicitly accept harms you haven't invited or don't deserve in order to avoid greater harms.

Fair interpretation. Seems that & mine overlap a little. What you’re saying is indeed unjust, but I guess many of us willingly take the trade off you describe when pressed. I dunno, I don’t feel strongly either way, just find it interesting.

I don't think you've ever taken a real trade like that and I don't think you'd find it "interesting" if you did.

Fwiw, I've taken this trade and have regrets. But my regrets aren't that I took the trade, it's that I didn't build up the trust and trade slowly and iteratively. I went all in and lost big.
