I think he is saying that being trusting of others has upside (all the benefits of connection) and downside (occasionally you get screwed).Unclear where the optimal point on that continuum is but it's not "maximally untrustful/vigilant". This implies getting screwed sometimes

I dunno. I just read it as something like, if everyone is compelled to be overly guarded & distrustful, we’ll all suffer. I don’t think it’s super sage life advice but seems like a good sentiment.
