If you're paying an actual protection racket, you ostensibly get some protection. Just try doing that with virtually anything in 2020.

I don’t think that’s what Sam is referring to. In small, random interactions with strangers, where people can’t identify and target suckers, behaving with enough openness where you (sometimes) become a sucker tends to pay off. The price to pay is just the sting of being cheated
